The following is the second part of an eleven part seminar on The Nectar of Devotion given by Śrīla Dhanurdhara Swami on April 4, 2015.

April 4, 2015 — Characteristics of Pure Devotional Service (Chapter One)

The Nectar of Devotion is Srila Prabhupada’s summary study of the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, a 16th century text by Srila Rupa Goswami, the chief disciple of Sri Chaitanya. It is considered within the tradition to be the most complete analysis of the path of Bhakti-yoga and is one of four foundational books Srila Prabhupada listed to be studied for a degree in Bhakti studies.

This seminar is for those who would like to deepen their understanding of bhakti-yoga through the study of this essential text.

The following is the first part of an eleven part seminar on The Nectar of Devotion given by Śrīla Dhanurdhara Swami on March 28, 2015.

March 28, 2015 — Overview of Nectar of Devotion/ Definition of Pure Devotional Service (Preface and Introduction)

The Nectar of Devotion is Srila Prabhupada’s summary study of the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, a 16th century text by Srila Rupa Goswami, the chief disciple of Sri Chaitanya. The following is the third part of a three part seminar given by Śrīla Dhanurdhara Swami on April 22, 2017.

Śrī Śikṣāṣṭakam – The Eight Instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu

Although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was a great scholar, he only left eight verses that he personally composed, but in those verses he systematically presents the philosophy of bhakti from the basic cores practices and moods of devotion to its highest attainment. Dhanurdhara Swami in a series of three lectures will explain in depth the meaning of each verse and discuss their practical application to one’s life.

ayaṁ hi dehino deho
dravya-jñāna-kriyātmakaḥ
dehino vividha-kleśa-
santāpa-kṛd udāhṛtaḥ
 

TRANSLATION
The living entity in the bodily conception of life is absorbed in the body, which is a combination of the physical elements, the five senses for gathering knowledge, and the five senses of action, along with the mind. Through the mind the living entity suffers three kinds of tribulations — adhibhautika, adhidaivika and adhyātmika. Therefore this body is a source of all miseries.

dhig aprajāṁ striyaṁ pāpāṁ
patyuś cāgṛha-sammatām
suprajābhiḥ sapatnībhir
dāsīm iva tiraskṛtām
 

TRANSLATION
A wife who has no sons is neglected at home by her husband and dishonored by her co-wives exactly like a maidservant. Certainly such a woman is condemned in every respect because of her sinful life.

sāpi tat-prāśanād eva
citraketor adhārayat
garbhaṁ kṛtadyutir devī
kṛttikāgner ivātmajam
 

TRANSLATION
As Kṛttikādevī, after receiving the semen of Lord Śiva from Agni, conceived a child named Skanda [Kārttikeya], Kṛtadyuti, having received semen from Citraketu, became pregnant after eating remnants of food from the yajña performed by Aṅgirā.

muktānām api siddhānāṁ
nārāyaṇa-parāyaṇaḥ
su-durlabhaḥ praśāntātmā
koṭiṣv api mahā-mune
 

TRANSLATION
O great sage, among many millions who are liberated and perfect in knowledge of liberation, one may be a devotee of Lord Nārāyaṇa, or Kṛṣṇa. Such devotees, who are fully peaceful, are extremely rare.
