June 6, 2015 — Rasa Theory (Summary of Chapters 20-51)

The Nectar of Devotion is Srila Prabhupada’s summary study of the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, a 16th century text by Srila Rupa Goswami, the chief disciple of Sri Chaitanya. It is considered within the tradition to be the most complete analysis of the path of Bhakti-yoga and is one of four foundational books Srila Prabhupada listed to be studied for a degree in Bhakti studies.

This seminar is for those who would like to deepen their understanding of bhakti-yoga through the study of this essential text.

paryaṭanti nareṣv evaṁ
jīvo yoniṣu kartṛṣu

TRANSLATION
Just as gold and other commodities are continually transferred from one place to another in due course of purchase and sale, so the living entity, as a result of his fruitive activities, wanders throughout the entire universe, being injected into various bodies in different species of life by one kind of father after another.

bandhu-jñāty-ari-madhyastha-
mitrodāsīna-vidviṣaḥ
sarva eva hi sarveṣāṁ
bhavanti kramaśo mithaḥ

TRANSLATION
In this material world, which advances like a river that carries away the living entity, all people become friends, relatives and enemies in due course of time. They also act neutrally, they mediate, they despise one another, and they act in many other relationships. Nonetheless, despite these various transactions, no one is permanently related.

Although Śrī Caitanya was a great scholar he only composed eight verses called the Śikṣāṣṭakam, but in these verses he systematically presented the philosophy of bhakti from the basic practices and moods of devotion to its highest attainment. Dhanurdhara Swami’s series of two lectures will summarize the essence of each verse to highlight the core of his teachings and mission.
