TRANSLATION
O King, the Supreme Lord Krsna thus wandered about the Vrndavana area, performing His pastimes. Once, surrounded by His boyfriends, He went without Balarama to the Yamuna River.

Sukadeva Gosvami said: Lord Sri Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, seeing that the Yamuna River had been contaminated by the black snake Kaliya, desired to purify the river, and thus the Lord banished him from it.

vrindaranya vraja-bhuvi gavam tatra govardhane va
naste himsa-harana-rahite raksakasyapy apeksa
gavo gatvosasi vipinatas ta mahisy-adi-yuktah
svairam bhuktva sa-jala-yavasam sayam ayanti vasam

TRANSLATION
Vrindavana Forest, Govardhana Hill, and the whole area of Vraja, are free from violence and theft. So one need not bother to watch one’s cows. The cows simply go out into the forests in the morning with the other domestic animals like the buffaloes, eat grass and drink water as they like, and then in the evening com home.

vraja-sthitanam tv ahar eva kala-
ratrir bhaved eka-lavo yugam ca
ravim rajo-vartma ca pasyatam muhur
dasa ca kacin meralim ca srnvatam

TRANSLATION
For those who live in Vraja, daytime is like the black night at the end of the universe, and in the blink of an eye a millennium. In such a state, they look at the sun and the trails of dust on the road again and again and listen for the sound of the flute.
